The Western Orange
County Head Start is a Center-based Program with classrooms of 14 to 21 children,
each directed by a certified educational professional. Each classroom
has two adults on staff including teachers, teacher assistants,
"grandparents", and volunteers. The classroom day runs from
8:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. or 9:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. and includes both indoor and
outdoor activities. Children have the opportunity to learn hands-on skills
using a variety of tools and techniques including, but not limited to,
interaction with block
building, dramatic play, creative areas, music, sand and water play, as well as
manipulative and quiet times.
The Western Orange County Head Start also operates a Home-based
Program that operates on the belief that the parent is the first and most
important educator in every child's life. The program
provides new experiences and ideas to both parent and child while striving to
improve the overall well being of each. Families are visited weekly (1 1/2 hours) by a Home
Visitor, who brings activities, ideas and materials for parents and children
to experience together.
The Western Orange County Head Start also has a Family Day Care option. Working parents
and student-parents can choose between two licensed child care providers in
Middletown, NY. There is also a provider available in Port Jervis. The
Family Day Care provides the children with both
activities and meals. The program is overseen by a Family Day Care Manager
who works closely with the providers, making sure Head
Start principles are followed and developmentally appropriate activities are
provided.
