Application Process (IHAP)
RECAP Inc., in partnership with the Orange County Dept of Social Services, works at assisting families on the road to self-sufficiency.
IHAP Case Managers visit with families in their home, who are applying for temporary assistance. They address the need for services and provide a strength based assessment covering but not limited to; financial, social, housing, legal, medical and safety issues. IHAP reviews the application with the consumer, determines what services may be needed and helps to resolve any immediate needs (i.e. food, housing, medical etc). IHAP provides information to consumers on other resources available in the community, and works with the consumer in applying for those resources.
The two locations out of which IHAP operates are Middletown and Newburgh. This helps to facilitate the provision of assistance to consumers throughout Orange County. Clients are referred to the case managers by the Dept of Social Services, and the appointments are scheduled by DSS, after the clients are screened. Bi-lingual Case Managers are also available, maintaining an awareness of cultural differences within the community and the needs of undocumented families. This insures that all consumers receive the highest level of service.
The role of IHAP is not simply to assist clients in their application for public assistance. Upon meeting with a client, the case manager looks at that individual or family’s unique set of circumstances, points them in other directions besides public assistance if possible, and shows them how to access other resources as well. IHAP works with the client through every step of the application process, verifying they receive all the paperwork they need, explaining required documentation to them, following up with them and their assigned TA worker and tracking the status of the case up until the determination of eligibility is made.
